Vinayagar Chaturthi:
The Hindu Festival which is marked as the birth of Lord Ganesha and welcoming him to receive his blessings is known as Vinayagar Chaturthi. It is a 10-day festival celebrated by Hindus all over the world. This celebration indicated the arrival of Lord Ganesha to the earth. It is the famous Indian festival celebrated with full glory and grand occasion that unite people from various castes and parts of the country. He is known as the savior of humans, and an obstacles remover. He is the first primary god who is worshipped by every Hindu before starting any new endeavors or new activities of life.
When is Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrated?
Generally, Vinayagar Chaturthi is observed and celebrated during the Tamil month Avani Valar pirai Chaturthi, which lies in the English month between august and September(Bhadrapada month).
Vinayagar Chaturthi Celebration:
Vinayagar Chaturthi celebration is an ancient festival followed for generations. The era of King Chhatrapati Shivaji, Maratha, and Peshwas was the peak in which the Vinayagar Chaturthi was celebrated in a grand manner. It was a family and temple function in general.
After the entry of British rule in India, these kinds of Hindu celebrations were abolished by them and restricted the people in celebrating such religious functions. With a long strong freedom fighter, social reformer Lokamanya Tilak fought and received the rights back to celebrate Vinayagar Chaturthi.
Later this became a grand public function in 1892. Mr. Bhau rangari installed a Ganesha idol in Pune. From then till now this Vinayagar Chaturthi is celebrated in a grand way as per respective place, people, and their customs and traditions. This also promoted unity among people beyond caste, creed, and religion.
Procedure to Celebrate Vinayagar Chaturthi:
The major process followed in performing Vinayagar Chaturthi is
- Installation of an idol of Lord Ganesha (varies depending on individuals)
- Performing pooja, abhishekam, chats, and offerings
- Carrying the idol in group public procession and dissolving them in the nearest water bodies after the 10th or 3rd day.
Clean the house, make it neat and organized. Clean the place where the idol should be placed with a base. Decorate with rangoli, thoranam, flowers, etc. Light lamp, incense, abishekam, offerings, and prasadham.

- Avahanam- Installation of the idol of Lord Ganesha (made of clay)
- Asana SAmarpan- offering seat for placing the idol of Lord Ganesha
- Padhya Samarpan- The process of washing feet
- Arghya Samarpan, Achamana- offering water
- Snana – this is the process of bathing the idol of Lord Ganesha. This includes the following categories
Jal snanam(simple holy water), panchamruta snanam(mix of milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar), dugdha snanam(milk), ghrita snanam(curd), madhu snanam(honey), sharkara snanam(sugar), suvasita snanam(oil), suddhodaka snanam(gangajal).
- Vasthra and uttaraiya samarpan- offering sacred thread and clothes to the idol.
- Yajnopavita samarpan, sugandha (scent)
- Akshantha
- Pushpa mala
- Dhoop, Sheep samarpan- Lighting diya and incense sticks.
- Thambula, Naivedhyam – Providing offerings to the lord
