History of Purattasi Month:
A long ago, there lived a poor potter named Bheeman on the town of Tirupathi. He was an passionate devotee of Lord Perumal. He had taken vow to observe fast on every saturday for Lord Perumal. He did not have anyone to assist him, so he cannot able to visit the temple. Then he find a solution for that, he made Lord perumal idol by using clay. Bheeman was poor so he find it difficult to buy flowers for the Lord. So he made flowers from the left over clay and hung in the garlands on the clay idols of Lord Perumal.
King Thondaimaan, who ruled around the areas of Tirupathi was also an ardent devotee of Lord Perumal. He used to visit the temple every saturday and adorn the deity with gold chains. When he came on one saturday he find that garlands of clay flowers adorning the Lord. Then the king thondaimaan suspects the priests for stealing the gold. Then Lord Perumal appeared in the King’s dream and told him about the devotion of potter.
Then the king ordered the soldiers to bring back the potter and they brought him back after that the king praised the devotion of Bheeman and offered him some money, but bheeman refused and told the king that worshipping the Lord itself was more than enough for him. The king was impressed by his devotion towards Lord Perumal. From that moment, during the month of purattasi devotees started to gave offerings in a clay pot.
When is Purattasi Month:
Puratasi is the 6th month in tamil calendar, it occurs on mid september – mid october each year. The name of the month comes from star that are visible on the day of the full moon.
What is Purattasi Vritham:
During the month of Purattasi people observe vritham. On that time people used wake up early in the morning, take bath and clean their house and sprinkle the water with turmeric mix. Then they clean their pooja room and light the diya lamp by pouring some fresh ghee in it. Also they put ‘’Thiru Namam’’ in their forehead. Then they cook some simple sweets to offer Lord Perumal. After that they will visit Lord Perumal Temple to seek blessings.

Purattasi month is considered as ‘Holy Month’. Comparing to other months purattasi month is very special, it is the 6th tamil and it falls between september and october. This month is dedicated to Lord Perumal.
