A group of eight wealth goddess who have been the incarnation of divine mother Goddess Lakshmi is popularly known as ASHTA LAKSHMI. This 8 avatar of Lakshmi has been taken in order to fulfill all the desires and needs of the human in different phases of life. 

The assumed eight form of Lakshmi is as follows who provides different kinds of wealth which every human being is in need of.

  • ADHI LAKSHMI/ MAHA LAKSHMI–  The great predominant goddess.         
  • DHANYA LAKSHMI– The goddess of granary wealth.
  • VEERA LAKSHMI/ DHAIRIYA LAKSHMI– The goddess of courage and valour.
  • GAJA LAKSHMI– The goddess of fertility, rain and food (elephant goddess).
  • SANTANA LAKSHMI– The goddess of progeny and continuity.
  • VIDHYA LAKSHMI– The goddess of knowledge and wisdom.

  • DHANA LAKSHMI/ AISHWARYA LAKSHMI– The goddess of prosperity and wealth.

These eight forms(ASHTALAKSHMI) from the manifestation of Goddess lakshmi are considered for the fulfillment of certain specific purposes and are connected to the various needs required in the living being’s life. All these 8 forms are required in this world in order to maintain an equilibrium state of material along with spiritual pleasures.

ADI LAKSHMI/ MAHA LAKSHMI:

This form of goddess lakshmi is the predominant one which stands as the first avatar and also known as Maha lakshmi. Another name provided is Ramaa which means the person who is bringing happiness. 

She is considered to be sprung and originated from the womb of lakshmi and plays the female attribute of the creation process. It is believed that she was invoked from churning the sea with the name of Moksha pradhayini(who bestows with liberation). She is offered with white and red flowers during prayers by married women.

She is seated on a pink lotus with a calm and pleasing face attired with red cloth and golden jewellery. She has got 4 hands holding lotus and white flag in two and showing abhaya varada mudra, blessing for purity, cleanliness and clarity in thoughts.

Worshipping this form of lakshmi will provide us benefits such as financial gain, resolves negative vibrations and brings fame.  Chanting Ashtottara shatanamavali(108 names of asi lakshmi) provides additional benefits.

“Sumanasa vandita sundari madhavi, Chandra sahodari hemamaye

Munigana vandita moksha pradhayani, manjula bhashini vedanuthe

Jaya jaya he madhusudana kamini, adilakshmi paripalayamam

DHANYA LAKSHMI:

This incarnation of lakshmi provides the equal distribution of agricultural wealth to all the people on earth. She ensures the abundance in harvest and nourishes the poverty of people in every way possible.

A myth is believed that when Pandavas of Mahabaratham faced the struggle of poverty during their canvas, goddess dhaya lakshmi bestowed them with a wooden bowl which provided food at every time and resolved their hunger.

With a green coloured attire she had 8 arms in which 3 hands holding agricultural products, 2 hands holding lotus, 1 hand with mace, and 2 hands with abhaya varada mudra granting charity to poor and hungry people.

When worshiped her by offering flowers and lighting lamps she blesses people with immense granary wealth.

DHANYA LAKSHMI STOTRAM:

“Ayikali kalmasha nashini kamini, vaidhika rupini vedhamaye

Kshira samudbhava mangalarupini, mantranivasini mantranute

Mangaladhayini ambujavashini devaganasrita padhayuthe

Jaya jaya he madhusudhana kamini, dhanyalakshmi paripalayamam”

DHAIRYA LAKSHMI/ VEERA LAKSHMI:

This form of lakshmi stands as an epitome of victory and bravery in both material and spiritual cases, as the name itself implies the meaning. The term dhairya or veera means bravery and being bold.

It is believed that once a wealthy king called Bhoja rajan ruled  a land with the immense blessing of ashtalakshmi where there is everything in his kingdom and she never left the place making it full of prosperity.And once in his dream appeared lakshmi that other forms of ashta lakshmi have to leave the place and he can choose one form to stay there constantly. He then decided to make Dhairya lakshmi to stay with whose blessing he can overcome everything to govern his kingdom. 

She is seated on a lotus red attire decorated with golden ornaments and flowers.She has got 8 arms in which 6 holding the weapons like disc, arrow and bow, trident, sword and 2 showing abaraya varada mudra blessing with the dispersal of all kind of fears and providing safety.

By offering her with flowers and lamps she bestows us with courage, bravery and valour to face and overcome every difficult situation of our lives.

DHAIRYA LAKSHMI/ VEERA LAKSHMI STOTRAM:

“Jayavaravarshini vaishnavi bhargavi, mantra svarupini mantramaye

Suragana pujita sighra phalaprada, gyaana vikashini sastranute

Bhavabhaya haarini papavimochani, sadhu janasrita padayute

Jaya jayahe madhu sudhana kamini, dhairalakshmi paripalayamam”

GAJA LAKSHMI:

The term Gaja means elephant(considered as a royalty power), hence this form of lakshmi got its name from providing the blessing of fertility rain and food. She gives the wealth of animals and those earning from that of cattle rearing.

A myth explains that an elephant named gajendra and lakshmi together offer their prayers to lord vishnu. As the elephant is bit slower than lakshmi, lord vishnu requests her to accompany along with him so that both can offer their prayers.and hence received the form of gajalakshmi.

This form of lakshmi is portrayed with the pose in padmasana on a lotus with 4 arms holding various weapons and lotus, Two male and female elephants showering abhishekam from their trunk continuously along with abhaya varada mudra in her hands blessing the protection of livestock. So in general she is considered as an elephant goddess.

GAJA LAKSHMI STOTRAM:

“Jaya jaya durgati nasini kamini, sarva phala prada sastramaye

Ratha Gaja thuraga padati samavrutha, parijana mandita lokanute

Harihara brahma supujita sevita, tapa nivarini padhayuthe

Jaya jayahe madhusudhana kamini, gajalakshmi rupena palayamam

SANTANA LAKSHMI:

This incarnation of lakshmi is known for her special blessings of providing progeny to those childless couples. She is considered to be the fertility goddess to bless certain types of people who are longing for children in their family.

In this form goddess lakshmi is seated on a lotus with red and yellow coloured dress decorated with flowers and golden jewelleries. She has 8 arms with a shield, sword , a water picture decorated with mango leaves and topped with coconut. She shows abhaya varada mudra showing her blessing. She has also got a babe(holding lotus)on her lap representing the main significance of this avatar.

When worshipped, she blesses the childless people with the wealth of progeny and continuity of the generation with prosperity.

SANTANA LAKSHMI STOTRAM:

“Ayikhaga vahini mohini chakrini, ragvivardhini gyanamaye

Gunaganavaradhi lokahitaishini, saptasvara bhushita gananuthe

Sakala surasura deva munishvara, manava vandhita padayuthe

Jaya jayahe madhusudana kamini, santanalakshmi paripalayamam”

VIJAYA LAKSHMI:

The term vijaya means Victory, where she provides us with victory in every field of our life to overcome all kinds of hurdles and handle every kind of situation with strong courage and determination.

It is believed a myth, that once there lived a called vidya rannar an ardent devotee of lakshmi. Pleased by his loyalty lakshmi tends to test him by making him realise that there is no pleasure in material life. Later she bestowed him with all wealth and he created a kingdom in honour of her with the material gain he was blessed with. Later it is said to become the VIjayanagar empire.

She has got a charming face with red attire decorated with flowers and jewels seated on a lotus.  Out of 8 arms, she is holding a disc, sword, shield and noose in four arms, lotus and couch in 2, abhaya varada mudra in 2 hands blessing with the physical and mental support for a strong grit.

Worshipping her by offering flowers, lamps, music and vermillion she blesses people with victory in all the endeavours of one’s life.

VIJAYA LAKSHMI STOTRAM:

“Jaya kamalshini sadgati dhayini, gyanavikashini ganamaye

Anudina marchita kunkuma dhusara, bhushita vasita vadyanuthe

Kanakadharastuti vaibhava vandita, sankara deshika manyapade

Jaya jayahe madhusudhana kamini, vijayalakshmi paripalayamam”

VIDYA LAKSHMI:

This avatar of lakshmi is taken to bestow the wealth of humanity which is not gained in any tangible form of materialistic things. The term vidhya means goddess of studies and knowledge.

With pure white coloured garment, garland of flowers and golden decorated crown she has got 4 arms, holding lotus, abhaya varada mudra for the blessings. She represents that knowledge is the real strength and power for a human to involve in any activities of life.(differs form saraswathi who is also one form of incarnation of goddess shakthi)

VIDHYA LAKSHMI STOTRAM:

“Pranata sureshvari bharathi bhargavi, sokavinasini ratnamaye

Manimaya bhushita karnavibhushana, santi samavarta hasayamukhe

Navanidhi dhayini kalimalaharini, kamita phalaprada hastayute

Jaya jayahe madhusudhana kamini, vidyalakshmi sada palayamam”

DHANA LAKSHMI:

This form of lakshmi is meant to be taken to eradicate the poverty from the lives of people and to provide more financial stability. The term dhana means money or wealth as the name itself implies this.

With red colour saree and golden jewels,in total of 6 arms, she is holding a discus, conch, water pitcher, bow arrow and lotus in five arms.From one of her palms there streams a shower of golden coins continuously.

A Myth is believed that, once lord vishnu and lakshmi got into an argument regarding the importance of money and she left vaikundam in the fight and reached earth in a form of princess named dhana lakshmi. Vishnu took birth as a forest dweller and fate made them meet under circumstances and He was in need of money to marry her. Hence he borrowed from the gubers the wealthy god to marry her. But kubera did not allow him to go back until he paid the debts. And then lakshmi made him realise the importance of money and blessed him with wealth. It is still believed that lord vishnu of thirumala thirupathi(Venkatachalapathy) still cant repay the debt that’s why people donate more money to settle his debts.

When worshipped with her offering, she paves the way for the freedom of financial stability.As she is also addressed as aishyawarya lakshmi she provides people with the blessings of prosperity, fortune and immense wealth.

DHANA LAKSHMI STOTRAM:

“Dhimidhimi dhindhimi dhindhimi- dindhimi, dundhubhi nada supurnamaye

Ghumaghuma ghunghuma ghunghuma ghunghuma, sankha ninada suvadyanute

Veda puranetihasa supujita, vaidhika marga pradarsayute

Jaya jayahe madhusudhana kamini, dhanalakshmi rupens palayamam”
